A few things have really started getting on my nerves. The first and the biggest is the candy and all the sweet crap the kids are delivered in school every day. I have never really mouthed my opinion on this before. I understand that candy is cheap and comes in bags with lots and lots in them. Now that I have a diabetic child my opinion has become a lot stronger. Not just for her but for all the other kids with allergies, weight problems or things like ADHD. I am sure the candy was a super idea for them. I don't know if a day goes through the year that the kids aren't rewarded with something sweet. I know it was a long time ago that I was in grade school but I do know that this definitely didn't happen. Sweets were given out at holiday party's and birthday's. In fact I think the rewards were more in the line of grades, comments, "good job", or that special "red" A marked big on top of your paper. Now it is constantly something, a pizza or ice cream party for attendance, box tops are any something else. They can even gain the prize of sitting with their principle (I bet she looks forward to that) at lunch or sitting at their teachers desk. No wonder the schools are more like a circus today than an educational institution. It has slowly been turned in to one. Teachers either have to pay off kids to behave or start doing circus tricks. And the thing is this really doesn't effect the kids that excel because they will anyway. The kids that aren't jumping through the flaming hoops are left feeling like crap, on top of a sugar high and well what do you think comes out of that?? Another thing I think is funny is that although MAP teaching has almost eliminated history and science in the primary class room the counselor visits classes ounce a week and don't forget about computer and library class, couldn't do with out that. I don't know but my kids get on the computer all the time with no encouragement.
I find this all crazy and even crazier as I realize all around us, even in Missouri, schools are eliminating candy and sweets. Even the kids that bring their own lunch are asked to bring nutritional food and snacks. I like this, I like the idea of giving back the power to the parent to see that their children eat healthy. US biggest issue obviously but even the simplest steps can change it. Rewards, what do these schools do?? Formal award ceremony's, kids all dressed up, with parents in attendance, extra recesses and field days, homework passes and movie days. The kids are still feeling great about there accomplishments, still having fun, what is so hard about that??
That is just one of my pet peeves.
